Terrible forecast of wind, cold and rain, but it didn't seem too bad when I got there.
Had some good flights before the cold wind got too much and I stopped enjoying it. Eventually had a tipover on an auto resulted in broken blades and some stripped servos. The 550 needs a service anyway with the main gear practically worn out.

Missed swimming to get to work early, as my boss implied he was at work with a client waiting for me. Then got another text saying he'd gone running. Thoroughly PO'd, so went to LARCS quickly and got a flight in before 9 o'clock. Thanks heavens I did, sorted my mood out, ready for the day.

A few flights after lunch. Not great weather, and a couple of fixed wingers flying a 4-stroke for ages, so I didn't stay long.

Late start today, no point going early, unable to charge without balance leads. Really nice morning, some of the moves I was working on settled down and looked good. Happy with that.

Rough day at work, didn't even take lunch. Just managed to get some flights in as the sun was going down.
I'm thinking about not competing this year. I decided to enter because it looked like a bit of fun, but when work becomes stressful, competing/preparing is the last thing you want to do. Maybe I'll just see how I feel on the day, but at the moment, preparing seems more like work than fun.

Got up early intending to have a full pre-work session. Started packing the car when I found a broken balance board lead on the charger. That meant no charging at the field, so no point in going too early. Ordered the bits from Align-trex.
Was a bit grey, so not great vis, worked on some piro stuff as well as chaos.

I changed the VBC over to a centre sprung throttle last night and had a quick sim session to test. I didn't like it, but I left it on and had a real session before the work this morning.
Ran the genny and got 5 flights on the 700 and a couple on the 550. First off I realised I don't have zero pitch at collective centre on the 700. It almost hovers at centre stick and drops like a stone inverted. The 550 was better with the collective centred.
In general it wasn't bad, but I just didn't like it. I can see where it would help for F3C style moves like stalls and 4 point rolls, but it just felt a bit weird. I'm going to fix the zero degrees on the 700 an leave it on for a for a few more sessions, but I don't see any benefits yet. My feeling is if do a lot of sticktime, you know where centre is, and you don't it to tell you.

Pretty busy. Nice session in the sun. Charged up 2 700 packs while I'll flew the 550 and then flew the 700. PRXR is coming on nicely but VTT8 has gone backwards. Will have to sim more.

Wow, what a morning. Initially a bit of disappointment as the gate was locked, but I managed to get in and it turned out to be an amazing session.
-3 Degrees but absolutely no wind, crisp and perfect visibility. Worked on some gentle piro tictocs, then a flight to music with the speaker instead of headphones. Finished off with 2 flights on the 550 practising rolling flips and flipping rolls.

A very long day with not much flying. Arrived early and used all my batteries by 10. Was just about to leave when others arrived, along with the rain. Did sim in the clubhouse for hours, until everyone had left and the rain stopped. Got a further 4 flights before it got too dark. Probably should have gone to Gumley instead. I heard it didn't rain up that way. Oh well, win some, lose some.

Ran the genny to get some extra flights in. Flew some SM and practised a bit of FTM. Even took the 550 out after having repaired it this weekend.

Got here at 8, hoping to beat the rain. I didn't. Sitting doing sim on my own, so sad :) The rain seems to be clearing, so hopefully will get a few flights in.
Rain stopped around 10. Flew the 550 loads as there was still a bit of drizzle coming down. Eventually I had an engine failure, managed to get it down without any damage, thanks to the opti-guard. The connector on the ESC had desoldered. It's had 100s of flights, so maybe corrosion or worn connectors generating heat. Either way, I'll replace the connectors instead of just resoldering them.
Flew the 700 for a bunch of flights, but the charger wasn't keeping up. Need to get a 2nd charger, but too expensive with PSU.
Good flying though, practicing piro globes, vertical tictoc 8, FTM.
Update: Just got round to resoldering and cleaning, and noticed the blades are stuffed. Flagging as a crash.

Went to Larcs for a pre-work session and couldn't get in. The farmer's changed the padlock number again, and I didn't want to phone him early in the morning to get the new number :( Went in to work instead and did an hour before going off to Gumley for quick few flights.
Blue skies and sun. A pity the flying wasn't very good. Tried some of the set manuoeuvres, but none of the batteries wanted to perform. I guess leaving them to freeze in the car overnight didn't help. Picked up some warm batteries for the 700 from home and went back to work. Hopefully the weather doesn't get too bad this afternoon. I really need to put the 550 away if I want to prepare for F3N this year.

Mikado fixed the timer on the VBC, so I'm happy again. The timer resets automatically on model bind, so I don't even have to turn the radio off between flights. Just plug in a new pack and it's ready to go.
The weather wasn't too bad, brightened up a bit on the way over. Did some hover and piro practice, and a bit of bumbling around. The heli defo needs a service of some kind. The blades are audibly going out of track during tictocs now.

Pretty horrible weather, but I only needed to finish setting the 550 up with the VBC. First off the screen was blank when it model bound. The new screen builder app didn't come with any defaults, so I disabled that and it was fine.
The heli doesn't fly quite as nicely as it did before so I have some investigating to do, but at least it can all be done from the VBC.
The timer app I complained about before is driving me nuts. It only counts from 0:00 up, regardless of whether you select upwards/downwards in the settings. Gonna have a good rant on vstabi.

With a forecast of rain and wind, I wasn't expecting to get any flying done. I only went down to see the guys and get my new card.
Luckily the rain stayed away and I got loads of flying in. Practised a bit of everything again, must finish my FTM and start practising that.
Phil had a flyaway quad, so spent the last hour of the day trudging around in the mud and rain with a few others. Good times.

The forecast was for a good flying day, and as the rest of the year looked pants, I asked to swap a half day for next week.
Quite busy at the club, with 10 others sitting round drinking tea. Fortunately cold enough for them to stay in the clubhouse while I flew. Absolutely loving the NEO, it's changed my style a lot. Just so reliable and consistent, everything is faster and nearer the ground. Loving it.
Lots of work on my weakside piros, drills, weakside funnels, etc. A really good session.

The fixed OWB didn't last very long, will have to buy some complete hubs instead. On the up side, I was forced to complete the setup of the NEO on the 700, and got my first flights with it. Absolutely amazing is how I'd describe it. Very positive cyclic, brilliant tail and super consistent. By the 2nd flight I was giving it the low down and felt right at home with it.

Intended to go swimming, but when I left the office, it struck me that it was flyable. Halfway to the flying field, I realised I didn't have batteries. U-turn to home, then back to the flying field. Got stuck behind Dean for a bit, as he was no doubt on his way to Midland Helicopters.

Little session all on my own. The wind was nowhere near as bad as it looked. Lots of rolling and piro practice. It feels like I've stepped up a level, so I'm looking forward to the coming year. Tx was practically dead and the genny ran out of fuel just at the right time to leave me with 2 packs as the light was dying. Cold. So cold, the screen on the charger wouldn't show, and when it did, it wouldn't top the batteries up. Really need to get another one. Had a couple of decent flights with Mark, Neale and Bill. Flew Mark's Goblin 380. Interesting shape would take a bit of getting used to, handful to land on grass as well, wants to fall over. The sun came out around 11, bad direction though, so didn't stay.

30 Seconds into the first flight and the motor stops. Just flipped back and bounced the landing with no damage. Figured I'd not flicked in IU. Reset and finished the flight no problem. 2 Flights later and it did the same thing. Landed in the long grass, so it looks OK, but I'll have to check the logs tonight. I checked the switch and I was defo in IU, so maybe it's a lockout that kills the throttle.

After a morning of rain, I knew it would clear and the field would be empty. Turned out better than I expected, with a warm sun coming through.
Did a few FTM routines without the music, and my flights are almost a minute longer than the music would have been. That tells me I'm flying beyond my natural speed and I need to come up with a different routine, which is probably why they are so messy.
Got some flights on the 700 as well. I need to turn the agility up so that it matches the 550, as it just feels far too slow. Will do that on Saturday at CMHC.

Nice little session with Mark before going to do some weekend work. Flew a couple of FTM on the 550, very messy. Then tried the same on the 700 with the same result. The difference between sim and IRL is massive, and doing a FTM is impossible to keep up with, so I may have to choose something slower or slow the music down.

Flew the 550 at first. After a few flights I lost drive down low and the head speed bled off. Put it down in the long grass with no HS. Looks like the OWB completely let go after all the tictocs. Skids and blades bust, the rest looks OK.

The 700 is flying nicely, had a good chat to AK again, picking up a few tips and confidence flying the thing.
Duncan's dad, Wayne, come over as well and told me the 700 has a buzz. What a nice guy. We had our first conversation for about 15 minutes and he suggested a couple of things I could do, as the buzz will damage the heli and something will break.

One of the younger members was throwing a 700 around like he's been flying his whole life, a bit depressing really, although I didn't actually enjoy his style. Flew the 700 a couple more times, but didn't want to push it, so went home in a good mood. Not a bad weekend.

Dropped by LARCS to find Glenn, Matt and a few other fixed wing pilots. Had a chat to them about joining. I was warned about the traveller camp nearby and advised to just leave if they turned up. Lo and behold 2 of them arrived a bit later and helped themselves to some chairs. A bit disconcerting, so I packed up and went to MK.

A bit late this morning, Mark and Gary already flying. The skies stayed grey all morning and even got a bit darker later. So much for XC's sunny skies, BBC Weather got it right though. Good to see Gary flying again, no skills lost there. Neale's flying seems to have made a massive jump. Flight after flight on the 700, piro flipping and down low with various orientations. Very impressive.

I finally got some proper flights on the 700. I think I'm going to have to stop flying the 550 and concentrate on the big one, as there is a difference in feel, enough to make things balloon or drop in the wrong places.

All in all a good session, although by the time I went for breakfast, the cafe was already cleaning up. Could have had a bacon sarnie, but I was so disappointed, I didn't bother. Going home to solder a shorter harness on the 700 and fetch a bigger ammo box.

One SM flight and then a FTM. Halfway through the second flight the tail lets go and starts pirouetting wildly. Hit TH and landed it fine, Mark thought it was part of the routine. Put a new ball link on the tail and hovered it around for a bit. Packed up, chewed the fat with Mark in the dark for a bit and went home.

Getting dark very quickly now, I hardly have time to charge. Did some trial runs of SM, FTM and FS. Not very good, wholly embarrassing in fact.

For some reason one of the leads from the PSU to the charger decided to melt itself to the plastic case mount. I'm charging 4 6s 5000 packs in parallel at 2C, so the charger is maxed at almost 1000 watt, but I've never seen this before.

Got home and it turned into the long night of soldering. I had to put new connectors on the charger and make a new lead for the PSU and also soldered 2 new packs for the 700. Still, I did a bit of reading and finished The Martian this morning. Nice old-school sci-fi, very good. Hopefully watch the movie this weekend.

A bit of mist around this morning. After a cup of tea with Mark in the clubhouse, we tested the 700 and did a few setup flights changing dual rates, etc. It flies really well. The speed is crazy, moves are just massive. I have to really slow rolling loops down or it just goes beyond the field perimeter. Looking forward to getting comfortable with this one.

Intended to be there at 7, but a bit of fog delayed things until 8. Tried working on some freestyle but the 550 just isn't keeping up. I'm seriously considering getting a 700. Mark was good enough to let me try his and there's a world of difference between it and my worn out 550. It might be a case of me needing to change dampers and links, etc, but it does fly better. I have to consider how serious I am about competition.
We had a few para-motors come in. They struggled landing and taking off in the low wind conditions, especially after a heavy breakfast at the cafe.

Wet and windy in the morning, so I stayed at home and swapped the ESC with the heatsink onto my main machine. Also completed the tail rebuild and went through the wizard on the Spirit to get that set up. Just one machine left to get flying.
I timed it perfectly and had almost 2 hours of blue skies, warm and low wind, all on my own. I didn't work on anything specifically, started trying aerobatic autos.
Since I rebuilt this heli, the cyclics hadn't felt quite right, but I thought maybe it was my fingers. It felt slow, but sometimes too quick. I remembered I'd been playing around with the agility last time I flew it months ago. Plugged the football in and found agility was maxed out Changed it from 120 back to 90 and it's great again.

Frustrating but with some light at the end of tunnel.

The new Talon was installed so I was looking forward to getting some decent flying in. What a disappointment when the first flight gave me the exact same juddering. We plugged it into Mark's laptop to see what we could find out. VBar had nothing in the logs, other than some juddering, so it's not low voltage. We started playing with timing on the ESC, with no effect, in fact each test was getting the juddering at less draw, until eventually it wouldn't fly and we finally figured out the OWB was shot. B*d, a new ESC, weeks of troubleshooting and it's the one-way bearing slipping.

Celebrated with a cider at the club with Mark. At least we know what it is now.

Got some great flights in at the end of the day when everyone had left. I managed to replicate the issue with the cutouts and it's not an issue with the power delivery, but the whole ESC/BEC itself. If I do a full power climbout, I was able to make the whole system reset itself. So no real draw on the servos, just a straight draw on the ESC and it reboots. Gonna have to get another Talon. At least I know what it is now.

Got in quite a few flights anyway, and one of the visiting 4x4 guys came over to say they'd been watching and they didn't understand how it flew upside-down :)

Took 2 helis to Gumley intending to complete the setups on both. Wasted a huge amount of time trying to get the Jive 100 working. There's no PC interface, just count the beeps and move the throttle guesswork. It just wouldn't give the beeps according to the manual, so I just gave up setting the AR. Tried to set the governor and it had some bull about using the best battery you have to get consistent speed. Never heard such sh*t in my life. Gone back to Castle. Not as reliable, but you just plug it into the PC and restore settings from file.
After getting that one working, turned my attention to the new one that now has a Spirit on. The tail seemed very sticky so I started stripping it. Looks like the previous owner doused it in locktite, so I'll have to do a proper job rebuilding it at home.
Got some flights in on the VBar 550. Getting cutouts during tictocs. Will figure it out later.
Still happy though, a good long session on my own sorting out all my stuff.

Went out to Central after not enjoying LMAC. Exactly what I needed. The genny worked brilliantly, left it running continuously charging batteries, and I got to fly both rebuilt 550s with lots of space in case it went wrong.

Had some really interesting things going on with both helis. If I pulled something with a lot of collective, the heli would either jitter or simply cutout for a few seconds. Checking out the logs, the vbar says it was getting low voltage on the rail and then having cold/warm starts. When I ran the OptiGuard, there were no issues, so I guess the power's not getting through and the guard is keeping the voltage up.

Really nice session, even with the crash, lots of others out in the sun. I had the new genny going, so packs available. Just flew a lot and started getting back into things again. Last flight I was doing some flippy stuff away from myself and towards the sun and it just did something unexpected. Being low and a silhouette meant I had no chance of getting orientation back. Well the genny didn't last long. Taking about 550 watts out of a 700 watt genny and it shut down a few times, before blowing smoke. Only had it 1 day so it's going back and I'll try another one. Fortunately Neale had his there so I still got loads of flights in.
Blue skies and hot. Met Dave who turned out to be quite a decent pilot. Another Grass Roots potential for next year.

Went to fly with Gary and Mark. The sky was pretty grey and my flying wasn't very good with the blue canopy. None of the moves I'd been practicing worked with the bad visibility and rotor coming off the hedge behind. Found an issue with tail that also might have been contributing. Of the 2 bolts pinning the tail control to the slider, one was missing and the other one was loose enough to unscrew with my fingers. Not a lot of fun, a bit cold, but good to see the guys. Up early with Mark for the AHA season opener. A bit wet and windy at the moment, but 4 flights so far. Loving the piro globes.

Some amazing flying going on. Everyone else seems to fly so crisply and not notice the wind. Maybe it's time for a 700. Had one more flight but wasn't really feeling it. I guess that's the difference between competition pilots and someone who just flies around.

Left work and the weather was perfect. Blue skies, sunny and no wind. Drove straight to the club and started charging batteries. Ripped the first 2 off as soon as they looked mostly done, put another 2 on and flew.
Amazing conditions, had to stop when it got too dark. Weak side piro loops seemed very accurate in zero wind, much easier.

With a forecast of heavy winds for the next week, and slow day at work, it was an excellent time to take a day's leave.
Took both helis, set them to fly the same and had a blast. Did lots of skids-in tictoc practice, weak side piro loop/flip practice and a bit of everything.
Bill, Pete, Palmer and Howard were there, Mick and Jim turned up as I was leaving. Cold wind, but so nice to just fly continuously. Happy!

Nice session in the sun. A busy flightline that disappeared as soon as I rolled up. Thanks guys!
Had a flight on Green with the new blades, perfect.
Did the same XFC moves as this morning but with a bit of wind and they were all over the place. More practice required.
Test flew Kevin's 450 DFC and it's a quick bugger. Loops had a definite pull to the left, and I almost put it in when I flicked the wrong idle-up switch.
I'm thinking about putting telemetry on the 550s. Depending on the flight style I'm sometimes landing with more than 40% left in the pack.

Not a very nice day, but exactly what I was needed. Spent hours finalising the setups on both machine, as well having a look at Richie's 500. Quite happy with the way my favourite is going again, but 4 weeks of not flying have taken their toll, never got comfortable or low. Had a vibration issue on Green, although eventually tracked it down to a bent torque tube.
I even had a play with the vibration analysis on the VBar, although it took me 10 minutes to find it.
Very happy that I have something to fly with some decent weather coming up this week.

After week of turmoil about flying styles and what I want to do, I had a really good chat to D who put my mind at ease. I'm sticking to technical flying, as that is what interests me, but the new higher headspeed is allowing me to fly it lower and with more confidence. Stayed with 2200, seems fine, 5:30 flight times are still reasonable. Damn heli is so quick now it keeps catching me out. Missed smashing a wave into the ground by a few inches, gonna have to start high again until I get used to it. Can't wait to see what it's like in no wind.

Pretty cold and windy, blue skies. Mostly tested the cyclic and piro rates. Left the headspeed at 2,200.
Changed paddle sim from 20 to 10 but couldn't see any difference. It was fairly windy and in my face, so pretty difficult to tell what was going on.
The higher headspeed feels pretty good. I can still make the tail break out, but the wave is a lot snappier. I've had to drop the flight time down to 5:30 as one of the packs came down at 9 %.
I didn't get a low voltage warning so I'm not sure why that isn't working anymore.

What a flippin' brilliant evening. I got down after work, banged in 8 flights, one after the other, all within an hour and a half, and all the reverse piro stuff just came together. The lack of wind probably helped, but it was just one of those sessions that leaves you on a high. Stoked!!

A couple of flights over lunch. I spent loads of time yesterday resetting and tuning both FBL systems and I definitely like the VBar more than the Vx1n. A nice afternoon, just Andy and Mike x 2 out. Was going really well and I came up with a nice new move, pull-through reversals. Suddenly just I lost it high up. I had partial control of the cyclic so it was one of those servos. Nothing I could do but hit hold and fight a little as it went down. Looks like a linkage ball worked its way out of a servo arm. A bit gutted as it was only repaired yesterday and flying so well. Not too unhappy though, a decent weekend's flying and Fast Lad had a sale running to get all the spares.

Exactly the kind of day I've been waiting for. Lots of maintenance/rebuilding in the morning while it rained. Sun's come out, very humid but flyable. Got the 550 VBar going again after last week's night flying episode. Just need to make some night blades and we're set for the Eagle funfly.
Changed my mind, it's far too humid and when the sun comes out, it's incredibly hot. Occasional dark skies and thunder.
Wind picked up massively as the dark skies passed, got very cold, then completely clear, blue skies for an hour or so.
