No wind, just nipped out with 4 packs.
Fairly confident flying here now (field nr home). Can do most of what I would at Eynsford with the available space.
Nothing new learnt yet, but now very comfortable with my circuits, stall turns, barrel rolls, static flips and rolls etc. Loops need some work as do circles and fig 8's.

Wind picked up again - only first flight was really enjoyable - the rest were just necessary practice!
Seem ok doing flips/rolls/barrel rolls in the wind but slow inverted flying still feels a bit beyond me when it's windy (too much chance of compensating for the wind with the wrong pitch direction!).
Still, felling happier flying here (field nr house) very convenient as can get there by foot, fly 6 packs and be home all within the hour. Not as nice a spot as Eynsford but definitely convenient.
oh and definitely got some windy landing practice (narrow path, tall grass and windy) kept getting grass trimmings coming my way!)

Had a few quick flights with Rich. He maidened his 550L. Looks good.
Feel like I'm not getting enough practice. Only flying once a week at best at the moment and no Sim time :(

A bit windy (got stronger during the three flights). Just wanted to keep up the practice.
Flying nr home in a quiet field. Seems like a good location, just have to get used to it.

Rich helped me with the governor (not getting the higher headspeed). Turns out it was just the Talon not seeing 100% as suspected. Had a couple of flights on the 550L running 2250 and it definitely feels better on continuous flips and rolls.
Had a good time with the 550e too. As the wind started to really pick up I was just playing around with some higher speed passes (well fast for me anyway!). Had to rush off in the end to pick up little one from preschool so didn't fly my last battery.

Lots more practice of my usual stuff. Need to try some more moves but just haven't had enough practice to feel confident enough. I was the only person there (apart from my 4 yrs old!) but still had a good time. Even had quite a blast with the MCPX...

Three flights in Dads back garden/field.
Feels tight (trees on both sides) but got a bit of flying in. Even managed a single barrel roll in the limited space!
Got to demonstrate my static flips and rolls and inverted flying for the first time to the family. I think they were suitably unimpressed!

Not great today.
Flyig a bit off. I was so desperate to get out (without kids in tow) but after a night out my flying was a bit rubbish!
Still, was good to catch up with a few at the club. Was good to see DavIds electric conversion on his raptor.

Bit too breezy for low fig8 practicing so just had some fun up high today.
Really enjoyed it, didn't really try anything new or particularly challenging but I am seeing a general improvement in all my existing moves. Really starting to get a bit of confidence to actually fly around inverted now (actually navigated a bit around the site instead of just doing a length inverted and then always returning to upright straight away).
Had a bit of a scare at one point - started to doubt I was in idle1 one so tried to have a peep at the TX and thought it looked like I was (in idle1). Did a flip to inverted and all seemed ok so gave it a bit more negative. At that point it became obvious I wasn't!! flipped back to upright and just got enough headspeed back to avoid a bit of a mess. Next time I might actually just check the switch position first! I guess even silly mistakes are part of learning best practices in this hobby...

Hardly any wind. Lots of fun practicing my flips, rolls, inverted lengths and some nice low inverted hovering too. Also did a few correct height fig8's that might just have passed for an A test (definitely not consistent enough yet though). One scary moment with the Dominator where I did a fast(ish) inverted climb and just at that moment the clouds broke to reveal a very bright sun right where the heli was! Couldn't see anything but luckily I had plenty of height so just kept my cool, flew by how I presumed the heli was reacting and did a nice controlled half loop back to upright and the heli reappeared as expected. Would have been a '5' star day but no one else was at the club so downgraded it to 4 due to being Billy-no-mates again...

The more I fly the dominator the more I want to replace the 550e with another 550L, but it's not going to happen this year unless one drops into my lap!

Managed 3 flights before little one woke up.
Everyone else at the club were busy fetteling with a heli in the office so I just went for it.
Then had a relaxed couple of hours keeping my son happy whilst popping up for the odd flight.
Wish all attempts to fly with kids in tow went so smoothly!
Actual flying was average - I did enjoy the light wind though and had some good inverted practice.
Roll on the next session...

Better today (much less wind) but I definitely wasnt on form today.
All over the place even managed to cross the flight line twice.
Need to go back to the sim I think a concentrate on my inverted orientations.
Still, I had fun and dis manage to practice my static flips a bit.
Had a good flight on the mcpx - I can now fly it a bit more like I fly the bigger helis - just need thoes lightning reactions!

Nice evening at Eynsford.
A little fig8 practice and lots of playing. Nothing new today, a bit of static rolls & flips. A quick flight of the Dominator to compare it to the 550e which I mainly fly. Also tacho'ed both Heli's:
550e Idle1 2000rpm (88% on tx) Idle2 2200rpm (98% on tx)
550L Idle1 & Idle2 both showing 2000rpm governed - must have a look at the setup.

Great day today.
Didn't get much further with my circles but that was mainly cause I was having too much fun doing other stuff!
Did quite a few static rolls (not very good) and some pretty good static flips (well for only being my second day doing them). I found I was able to hold quite well with the static flips - better than I thought I would, but then maybe Ive been doing them for a lot longer on the sim than the rolls.
Had great fun doing lengths of the field flipping to inverted and then heading back the other way (seem to be more confident now and can keep going). Also did quite a few more 'reverse' loops (or whatever they are called) where you are upright at the top rollarond to inverted for the bottom of the loop.
As it wasn't too busy today people were only flying one at a time and I suspect I may have been subconsciously flying to the onlookers without realising it. I guess it wasn't a bad thing although I think the overconfidence did cause me to make a couple of mistakes that could have ended in a bit of a mess. Still it's all helping build up those reaction times...

No wind & first time out for a while with no kids!
Had some good practice doing circles I'm not sure they are improving but definitely got some stick time. Also did my first length of the field with a flip at the end to inverted and came back the other way up and then flipped to upright at the other end. Not something I found difficult on the sim but just never tried it before in real life - I guess I just hadn't wanted to try flipping at speed - but really its not very different from entering a loop - just coming out of it half way through!
All in all really enjoyed myself even though had to sit out the drizzle for 20mins.

Just got a couple in today - had both boys (pre-schoolers) with me and quite a few others up at the hill too so that was all I managed. It was good to see a couple of fixed wing flights, two other people I haven't met before (who also fly Heli's as well). Even got to see Tony's first plank flight - pretty impressive for a first time, but I'm not going to be swayed - not more toys for me for a while!
5503 felt good - I'm just not as relaxed when I'm with the boys (too much distraction). Just practiced my rolls and a couple of barrel rolls nothing else really today.
As soon as I get a couple of hours to myself (and no wind) I really want to work on my figure 8's/circles and inverted orientation just need 100% concentration...

The wind that never goes away (well Sunday was ok but couldn't get out to fly).
Started off ok - Some barrel rolls and a little hovering inverted (at height). After a while I just ended up doing circuits as didn't trust myself getting wind corrections wrong whilst the wrong way up! That got boring so started practicing my circles. Did some good ones and tried joining them up to make a proper fig 8. Did one really gone one then the rest went to pot. Had some very near misses with the ground (wind popping the heli up and down) actually caught the ground a couple of time (skids not tail fortunately) and then decided this is crazy and went back to circuits for the last battery. All in all I'm, glad I got out and the wind practice was probably good for me but I'm not sure I actually 'enjoyed' the flying that much and was probably lucky I came home with an intact 550!

Just a quick four flights this morning.
Felt good, only a little wind. Static aileron rolls are better. Did a little bit of direction changing inverted. Best of all Rich managed to get some nice shots of me doing a low inverted hover - will post then here later.
Also changed the throttle from 95% to 98% - seems a bit better. We (Rich) did try and get a headspeed reading but the phone app just wasn't having any of it. Probably too much other noise from the noisy bearing whine I'm still getting.

First direct comparison between the two 550's
both fly well, but obviously the 730mx in the dominator makes a big difference. I did motice that the headspeed on the 550e really drops if doing continuous eileron rolls.
had a real blast with the mcpx too - first proper go at doing lengths with stall turns at each end.

A random field/garden
4 flights
A quick few flights in a neighbours field with the 550e.
Some low voltage power lines at one end kept me restricted for space so apart from a few gentle rolls to inverted, I concentrated on slow skills.
Seem to be ok for the T manoeuvre, but my attempts at a small slow figure of eight are still rubbish.
I think I still underestimate the amount of inertia that a 550 has - I either total miss the centre passing point (middle of the 8) or screw up one of the banked turns. Think I need to slow everything down even more.
Very little wind - It's a lovely feeling doing low slow manoeuvres with a heli the size of the 550 when it's calm. Good fun when there's not a lot of space for flying. Must have a look what other things to practice in this mode...

Beaulieu Aerodrome
6 flights
Got out again this afternoon!
6 packs. First couple were a bit subdued as left my cap in the car (Lowish sun).
After I sorted that I had a real blast. My barrel rolls are getting tidier.
Practicing aileron flips at lower height than I'm used to. They are nice and easy, nothing to correct once over! Brought the heli low and close a few times (by my standards anyway).
Some nice fast circuits, bringing the heli nice and low on the passes (for an onlooker).
Just really enjoyed myself - I was only there for 80mins or so but relaxed quickly (got most of my nerves shed on the first flight) and really settled in. Could have had another 6 if I owned any more batteries! Well that's probably it now till next Tuesday at the earliest.
Oh and also saw a guy with an dji inspire 1 - he will be using it for work and has to do his BNUC-S so was practicing for that. Nice little bit of kit.

Beaulieu Aerodrome
5 flights
Had a great day flying in the New Forest today.
Beaulieu Aerodrome is a great spot for flying, although it's probably biased towards fixed wing as helis have to fly off to the left of the main area. This means that unless no-one else is flying you end up over concrete for the most of your flight (no really a problem, but was my first time being in this situation). Having said that, met a few guys flying planks and a one other heli chap who seemed pretty friendly.
Nothing special to report on my flying really, just confidence building doing my usual routine. My barrel rolls are getting a bit better - feel like I would like to be able to 'roll' a bit faster - have to ask some of my more experienced peers if this is advisable?!
Spent a bit more time inverted than normal, did first full turn (stall turn not banked) and headed back in the opposite direction - hopefully I can add another turn and then I'll be doing length flights inverted (and then progress to proper inverted turns?!) maybe I'd better get that 100% on the sim first!

When I got back to the inlaws house I was still on a bit of a high so flew another 6 flights on the mcpx BL and 130x in their garden. Had an absolute blast - haven't really flown my micro's since getting the Dominator. I seem to have come on along way - no bad crashes (ok, so two 'inverted landings' but that was due to me miscalculating the 130x bogging soo much!)
Discovered that I can now fly quite happily doing circuits and thow in the odd inverted hover without much problem ( even two months ago this wasn't really possible for me). Found in a smaller space its much easier to do an aileron roll to get inverted than a elevator flip. I was flipping (rolling) back and forth all over the garden having a great time. Did some basic inverted hovering and bought the heli nice and close (mcpx) a couple of times. Also first time I've really got the 130x inverted - not sure why always found it a bit twitchy but today it was really behaving itself (apart from the inverted landings of course).

Had 2 flights while my 2yr old slept in the car. And then a further 2 flights.
No noticeable wind to affect flying today. Felt good to have unhindered control.
3 flights on the main field, one off the end. Nearly lost it off the end field (not the first time either - something about having trees behind me throws me I think). Not sure exactly what I did but maybe lost orientation after a bad turn on inverted hover? Anyways, it came out ok in the end!
Otherwise all went well. Did a few barrel rolls - managed to kept the heli in a little bit more of a fixed path this time. Been doing some slow manurvers inverted, just the odd 90deg turn and then continue heading in the new direction. Also did a long pass with a half roll continued inverted and then looped back upright (to head back the other way). Felt a bit like my first proper bit of mild aerobatics!
Ok, maybe getting a bit ahead of myself there.
Stationary rolls and flips a bit more stationary now.
Did a few circles - bit messy. Think I was losing concentration as Daniel was awake by this time.
All in all a good few flights seeing as it really was only a one hour slot at the field.
Tue, 19 May 2015 00:00
Field in Sittingbourne
3 flights
Breezey but random gusts today.
Some gentle circuits and some practicing of my rolls (not good!).
Did some flips and inverted hovers at a lower height than before (not miles away up in the sky!) and felt fine.
Wind really picked up on the last flight - had a play with different head speeds in the wind. At 88% definitely more docile (and therefore slower) but harder to recover when it drops after a gust of wind (after you've just decreased pitch to negate the extra lift from the last gust). At 95% much better but picks up speed fast when you fly with the wind!
Better make this the last flight of the 550e as those bearings are really sounding rough now.

field in High Wycombe
1 flights
Found a nicd field nr some friends in High Wycombe (private land - massive wide spot)
Strongest wind ive flown in yet. Thought id just hover to see what it was like but as the wind was only from one direction and steady it was easier than I thought.
Did my usual run of circuits, inverted hover a couple of loops and a roll. had some good fun playing with the wind. If this weather keeps up I may just get used to it.

A little windy for me.
Demonstrating my skills (or lack of) to my father.
Flying in private field behind his house.
New location and windy so took it easy. Just some circuits and a few flips and loops.
Good wind practice. Some nice flarring (stalls) into the wind.

In vstabi changed expo on tail down from 40 to 30 and put piro rate up to 105 (as suggested by Rich23). Felt better (in fact I had forgotten about the change) and it felt the same as the tail on the dominator now.

First flight of my 550e.
First flight of a v-bar (clone).
Seems good, quite different from the spektrum beastx.
Had 3 flights, one 'test' flight and two gentle circuits with a few flips and rolls thrown in.
I think I will enjoy the 550e as much as the dominator - just need to speed up the tail a tad.
