Another great couple of solo flights. Fudged the Tic Toc Square on the corner that cost me a heli last year but not bad for the first flight of the day.

On the second flight I had a try of a transition that Connor uses to great effect.

Fantastic session and got to see Rich's new Logo 700 in action. Had some great flights on the 700 Dom but still looking at moving on. Choices were Logo 700 or Goblin 700 Comp and it wasn't made any easier with both helis in atendance today.

Connor's flying was mediocre at best this morning but we are trying to get him back to competition best before the 3D Champs :-)

Started off well with an optimizer flight and a nice 2nd flight although the tail fin stuck in the ground on a nose-in landing. One end of the TT unscrewed but at least the tail blades survived. I didn't even realise that Align had stopped pinning the ends of the TT!!

Was going to pack up and leave it there but was offered a TT out of someone else's model. Quickly swapped over, checked everything on the bench and before takeoff. Heli spooled up ok but then the tail let go......2 seconds and it was all over. Model wrecked, NEO case clips broken even though nothing hit it. Total disaster. Rechecked gears at home and still none the wiser as to why it let go???

Poor visibility today and not a great deal of confidence behind the sticks. Took Connor's advice on the reversals and it's showing some promise. Also had a crack at WooHoos which may or may not be technically correct but look ok.

Oh yeah....my thumb slipped of the stick mid Piroflip but thankfully had my brain engaged.

Down one pack as a cell went on one of my Gens Ace so down to 2 flights for now.

Not really with it today but trying a funnel figure 8 with piro crossover both sides. The return side is a bit of a mental stumbling block and very hesitated.

Carrying on with the regulars today. Didn't hit my Piroloops so well today but had a go at a funnel fig 8 nose down one side and also Piro tictocs with right rudder. Lots more Piroflip Reversal today (nearly 2 minutes worth in one flight) and a really nice final flight that, although unitidy, had a nice mix of stuff in it.

Thu, 21 Jul 2016 10:10
Medway Massive RC

3 back to back flights continuing with Piroflip reversals which are slowly looking better although I need to rethink the changeover as changing rudder one way gives an okish Pirowobble but the other results in a tilted disc which I just correct when doing my stronger side Piroflip. Weakside Piroflips are becoming more natural to the thumbs which is a bonus.

Also trying out some other little touches here and there and Piro Loops will be next on the agenda.

Not a bad morning overall.

Went straight up on the first flight and into Piroflip reversals but later on in the flight I got it wrong and kept stirring away as I usually catch it but was just about to go in before rescue. Not enough punch for a decent climbout but the heli was saved and it only cost me a pinion as I snapped a tooth.

Went much better on the 3rd flight.

Perfect weather but felt a little bit wishy washy today. Leapt straight into some weakside stuff...making a point of doing this every flight.

Didn't get my Piro loops today but the sun was in an awkward spot and the field is infested with bugs that are too friendly for their own good.

Also trying to improve my weakside Piroflips. The upright section is still screwy.

Job and knock this morning and some cracking weather!

Spent the bulk of the 3 flights with weakside stuff. Knowing I had rescue it gave me the opportunity to brush up on the muscle memory.

Had to talk myself through weakside forward inverted circuits and (poor) funnels. I know the stick movements and can sim it without issue but at the field it's usually hit and miss (more miss).

For Piroflip reversals I happily 'caught' the heli when out of position/ orientation but on the last flight I was not 100% sure of the exact orientation of the heli during an attempt at a reversing inverted piro circuit. Not willing to chance it I hit the rescue and brought the heli back over.

In fairness I wouldn't have even given it a go as it was a leap of faith and a bit more than I can handle atm 👍

Tried the AR bailout on the last flight and on the last go I accidentily hit hold but the HS recovered pretty well and no damage.

Very poor visibility against the overcast sky but I feel like I'm gradually getting back to form. Reversals will be something I'm aiming for soon.

Had some great fun today tried out some bits for a routine. The music may not quite be the right tempo for it :-) Had to save the heli twice today.

Had a go at pirouetting the wave at each segment again but still not totally comfortable. I'll persist with those though. Attempted to rotate elevator tic tocs on the aileron axis but it was rushed and not pleasing to the eye TBH.

Tried the NEO rescue again and it reverses the rudder either way you go. I assume to stop momentum faster and rescue quicker.

Got see Dean maiden the Protos Max V2 which he seemed pleased with. After dismantling his Vcontrol for the 6th time this week I think he has his stick tensions where he likes them too.

He put on a stunning last flight worthy of a high GR Freestyle placement and rounded off a nice session.

I got to try Rich's Protos again with a bit more confidence this time.

Also as it came up on Addicts a couple of times I think I have dispelled the rather stupid myth of how nicely the NEO rescue performs a half piroflip. Starting with a slow inverted pirouette and then hitting rescue the heli is over way too rapidly to even remotely ressemble said move.

Anyway, good session and the temp did rise to a reasonable level nearer the end.

Tried out the Nick Tocs but failing on the return. Some part of that was cold thumbs, some brain-freeze but only just started so there's room for improvement. Tried a few other little additions to the flight so just picking my battles at the moment.

Dean pulled off some great revolving aileron Tic-Tocs so looks like sim time is paying off for both of us this weekend :-)

Tried out my hat cam in 720P with zoom but it cut too much of the FOV so won't be using it again. Also set the EL too high (as my videos were pretty dark) and this gave some very bright/white footage so dropped it back down.

Had a nice session and pleased with the V4 update so far. Not much in the way of wind today but the hands were suffering from the cold.

Out of the box I have done the following:

GOV

Reduced default gov gain to 3%

ROTOR

Expo -30%
Deadband 22uS

Agiliy 55%
Style 57%
Main gain to 46%
Rotor P gain 43%
Elevator D gain 65%
Cyclic response 50% (for preference).

TAIL

Expo -45%
Deadband 22uS
Piro rate 550*
Tail gain 41%
CCW stop gain by 65%
CW stop gain by 110%

Think that's it so far. It flew well out of the box using the style/ heli wizard and the work on the tail algorithm really shows.

On V3 I had to reduce the Pirouette I gain from default to get a smooth pirouette but in V4 this option has been removed as it is definitely not required.

Got to the field to test out the new V4 firmware on my VX1n.

Some noticable improvements to the governor. I only changed the default gov gain to 5% and it performs well with a more powerful feeling motor and consistent headspeed from start to finish of the the flight.

The default tail is much softer then on previous versions which I think was needed as you got loads of people complaining about wags on stops. I always thought it better to be softer and the user can then increase gains/ stop gains to get the desired feel. Only needed to increase the CW stop gain and the piro rate to my preferred 550*

For some reason the elevator felt much fast to come in then it did on V3 using the same settings so I will start adjusting the agility/ style to suit.

Really need a less overcast, calmer day and warmer hands to see what's really going on but out of the box it's a much better package.

One great flight in the sunshine then the fog descended which made for an interesting last 2 flights. Camera battery packed up too so the theatrical disappearing and reappearing of the heli throught the fog was missed.

Tried the new Zippy packs for the first time and they were fine. Waiting to cycle them a few times to see if there's any extra ooomph to be gained. After that it'll be a case of longevity before I invest in any future packs.

Amazing weather and a great session at the field. The chirping and tail vibe were related and dropping the gov gain to 5% cured both issues. I can only put it down to the drive train being smoother than on the original airframe. On inspection during the repair some of the bearings were definitely in need of replacement.

Down to one flight pack at the moment but now have another set of opti packs and HK zippys on order ready for next weekend.

I have changed back to the 9.33 gear ratio and the chirping of the motor remains. Will have to experiment with gov gains on the next session although this chirping only appeared after the crash. Also some wag has developed on the tail. I suspect the TT bearings may have moved up the TT so will strip down in the week.

Other than that it was a good turnout today and lots of nice flying to watch.

The head took the brunt and is pretty mullered and lost a couple of links and the boom snapped off clean at the boom block with the tail assembly untouched. So far all else looks ok but I'll have a better look later.

Might be a good opprtunity to buy the 700 FL head that I have been eyeing for a while.

Windy today and in the direction of the flightline so not confidence-inspiring. Mostly stuck to what I was comfortable with but also tried an elevator slapper and Piroflips the other way.

Had a flight on Dean's 10S LOGO 600 SX. Very nice machine with an almost identical feel to the 550 SX but with more authority on the stops and a little more oomph.

Props to Dean for edging forward with some new moves especially in the wind today.

A great session with great people. Had a bad cell in a pack giving me a little grief on the first flight but I flew through it. Didn't quite accomplish everything I wanted to today but fun all the same.

Nice to see Dean forging forward with Piroflips and enough with the Piro Tic Tocs to demonstrate a good foundation.

Lots of weakside practice today and a slightly softer approach to inputs made it easier and nicer on the eye to fly. I'm feeling more comfortable with the backward inverted ACW and Piroflips the other way.

I had a bit of a surprise on the second flight when the 700 hiccuped in a quarter piroflip near the ground. Looks like I'd been in the air for 6.30 and had 5% left in the packs.

Thoroughly enjoyed both flights in the dim sky.

Weather was abismal but had a great laugh with the guys at the Medway Massive - 2D Chumps competition :-)

Vids uploading and everyone was on top form.

Flew solo today and spent the first flight with some weakside backward inverted and also a few Piroflips the other way but they were all over the place. All else was just the usual moves but I'm enjoying them.

Didn't calm myself down much on the second flight and went into a piro frenzy lol

Meeting up with the rest of the group tomorrow so hopefuly better times ahead.

Great turn out and suprisingly good weather. Dean has moved on to Piro Tic Tocs and everybody was trying out the AR bailouts on their respective helis.

Feeling more and more rusty as the weeks go on. Need to win the lottery and quit work so I can fly all the time :-)

Just updated to the latest Castle software on the ESC and also put it into multirotor mode as it apparently gets the best performance from the Vortex E.gov

Auto bailout is working properly as is the softstart (had an issue with a 40 second ramp up).

Met up with Dean for a nice flying session. Wind was strong but the rain held off. Finished with a flight on Dean's 700N with 105. Very nice and with excellent hangtime that the electrics just don't have.

Popped out quickly with Pete in the afternoon and the sun was much more favourable than this morning. Piro Pogos are shaping up with every flight but still need work. Same goes for Piro tic toc loops.............I'm getting the gist but work needed for a better shape.

Was in a rush today so from door to field to door in 25 minutes flat. Trying out some bits and pieces and working on weakside stuff as I've been neglecting it yet again and for now it looks a little rough. I did my best Piro Pogo to date but mainly as I slowed the inverted decent down considerably.

Did some weakside funnels, inverted backwards and reverse half Piroflips (well quarter) on the first flight. It would appear for now that not flying as much has spurred me on to make the most of when I do go flying.

Dismal sky and not really feeling it today but glad to get the thumbs greased up.

Found a buyer for my 300 CFX so I slapped a Kbar on it and gave it a couple of test flights.

Felt rusty when I turned up as not been out much recently. Had a great session though and managed to bag a couple of piro tic toc loops. So far I'm really happy I stepped up to a 700.

Some more, very productive PID tuning. Will be doing the same with the Logo 550 tomorrow at the ARA helicopter day. Learning something new every day :-)

Lots of people talking about PID control loops recently and thought I'd have a play and see what happens. Already had success with increasing the I gain on the tail so I moved on to the cyclic PID.

First up was the I gain as I have the main cyclic gain where I wanted it. Increasing this over a few flights I noticed the heli was tracking much tighter and I think by the last flight (the attached video) I had gone a little too far with it. A little hard to explain but one example was the piro fig 8s which just stayed on point and didn't want to fall out and at times I actually tanked the rudder with the confidence the heli wasn't going to go anywhere.

A couple of times it felt a little too locked so I have backed it off a little and will try again next time at the field. Next up will be D gain to see what happens there.

Met up with Dean for a little jam session on the 700. I have been reading a lot lately that people have been increasing the I gain on the tail of their Vortex units with success in getting greater holding power. I tried this myself today and it's made a huge difference with rainbows and other things.

Had a go at a Piro Pogo but always a brown trouser moment on the descending inverted piro section lol.

I have been toying with part of a routine on neXt RC simulator over a couple of evenings and decided to give it a go at the field today. For a first go and in the windy weather I was bowled over. Just uploading a comparison video to add here later.

Obviously there are differences but it's good enough for me :-)
