Did some dry run autorotation training by just going really low on the rpm and listening to when the motor engages. Once I came down too hot and the akids touched the ground ever so slightly. No damage.

The perfect day! No wind at all and blue skies. I had so much fun. And for the first time I really felt that I was flying inverted. Other times I move the heli from one spot to another inverted or I concentrate to make one half turn, but this time I was just flying around inverted.

Felt really great. For the first time in a long while I felt that I made progress in my flying.

I went to a local club as a guest flyer. The weather was sunny but a little bit windy. First it took some getting used to flying "in public", but then it was ok. Having that much space to fly was a completely new experience and is definitively great.

I will have to change the belt on my Protos. The tension is a lot looser and also I think the belt looks different.

The flights were ok and the weather still great. But after two flights with the 500 I heard some strange noise. During spool down there were more vibs than usual. I felt the tail while Spinning the blades and it felt really notchy. I guess that the tail shaft bearings got damaged by the bent tail shaft I had been struggling with for a while.

I was so happy to have the 500 back in the air and now: back to the bench

What a day! Perfect weather and finally I have the 500 fixed! New bearings in the tail blade holdes, new tail rotor hub and new tail shaft finally did the trick. Also added a ferit ring on the rpm wire and now even the governor is working. It was a blast to fly! Also the 450 did great without wind against blue skies.

It always amazes me how much fun it is when everything just runs smooth!

Still struggling with vibrations on the T-Rex 500. They got so bad that one screw for the tail shered off. This really can't go on like this.

I tried my first flight on the 500 with the governor and almost crashed the heli. The headspeed was a lot higher than indicated in the software! It just kept increasing the headspeed and must have gotten close to 3.000 😱 before I pulled throttle hold and managed to bring it down safely.

After that I did some more testing but the heli flew good only at about 2.100 headspeed, over that it started making strange noises. I tested the belt tension and there was no tension whatsoever. My guess is the belt is gone and at higher headspeeds it was touching the boom. I am lucky no serious damage happened, but I am not looking forwared to taking off the side frame to change the belt.

I think I fixed the vibration issues last night and activated the governor. It flew decent, but it did not reach the headspeed I wanted. At night it turned out it has governor glitches. Will have to figure out what to do there.

Than I did some nice flights on the 450. I put it to the higher headspeed and thundered over the field. Really exciting! Did some loops as high and big as I dared. Then I made some simulated autorotations by switching to the lowest headspeed and bringing it down aggressively from really high up. Due to the sound when flaring I think the headspeed would have been good for a auto landing.

Really bad crash!

The weather was so great I absolutely wanted to get two quick flights in. Besides being in a rush it went well the first pack and the second one I worked on rainbows and they were coming along very good. I made one rainbow and when the heli came out of it perfectly I just added another one. That one also went very smooth. It came out not 100% perfect but I just kept going and tried a third one in a row. By that time the heli was not that high any more and also not in the middle of the field. While doing the inverted stop I noticed that the heli had banked a little bit more. Since I was not in the middle of the field anymore I decided to correct although not feeling comfortable in doing so. While doing it I corrected in the wrong direction, so the heli went into a steep angle and without much height to compensate for errors it went in sideways, blades first. To make it even worse I was a millisecond late on the throttle hold:

- one blade cut in half, one blade broken 😠
- DFC-Head Damaged 😠
- main gear stripped (only a couple of teeth)
- at least one servo gear stripped
- One link missing
- Landing skids broken

What a bummer!

I got to the field with plenty of time, the weather was perfect: blue sky, sun coming up behind me, already quite warm. Normally I fly almost against the sun in that field in the mornings, but today I walked all the way accross the field to have the sun in my back and it was a good decision.

Today the weather was great and I had a fantastic first flight. Checked the heli and everything was fine.

During my second flight I switched to the higher RPM and the heli is really fast with that headspeed. I made a very tall stall turn when the heli suddenly started piroing uncontrollably!

In my mind I already saw the heli shattering to the ground when it started piroetting uncontrollably while being completely vertical! I hit throttle hold immediately and started my first real life autorotation!
I had no tail control, but due to the airflow the heli adjusted into a forward looking position and I acutally managed to pull of a very decent autorotation landing! My heart was pounding like crazy when I walked to the heli and it looks like nothing was damaged! The landing was by no means soft, but not overly hard neither and the heli did not tip over or anything like that. When looking at the tail I noticed that the ball cup had come off the tail push rod, so that the tail was completely loose!

So I guess my lucky streak continues, because I was doing the stall turn at the end of the field and it came out of the stall turn facing towards the field without any tail control. And no damage to the heli after such a failure is just incredible!

I still can't believe I pulled off the auto! I consider this to be the best heli crash of my life!

NEAR MISS

After having finished the tail rebuild last night I was anxious to get back in the air. It was raining all day, but on the way back from work it stoped for a moment so I took the chance to get the heli in the air.
I kept the first flight short to check whether everything was allright after the tail rebuild. And it was really good I did. I must have forgotten to put locktight on the ball link! What at stupid mistake! It had actually backed out about half way in the 4:45 minutes of flying! I consider myself really lucky nothing worse happened.

REALLY LUCKY TODAY
First: The perfect flight. The weather was just incredible, blue sky and absolutely no wind. Flying was really great with big loops and nice rolls.
Second: I had only time for one pack and when I packed everything in I noticed that one of the screws on the tail blade holder (that connects it to the tail slider) had backed out half way during the flight! If I had had time for another pack I may not have noticed this. And that screw would have come off completely in no time!

First flight after fixing the skids. The CF-Rods I had epoxied to the lander for added stability came off immediately, but the epoxy seems to do the trick.

The new r² buffer unit is activated and works like it is intended: you don't even notice it is there! On the ground tested for how long it provides energy to the servos in IU without LIPO. About 20 to 30 seconds, so more than enough to try an auto in case the ESC or battery fails.

Other than that just happy to hear the sound of the blades and feel the added mass of the heli when compared to the master cp.

Sun came up behind the trees and I did not have sunglasses so I only had a small patch of field where I could fly and see the heli alright. Noticed that the front right skid was vibrating. Checked it and it seems the CF is weak at one point. I will have to figure out whether I can strengthen it with epoxy and maybe some kind of reinforcement. Since it is custom made by the previous owner getting a spare will be difficult, but I don't want one skid coming off mid flight neiter (might make the landing kind of tricky).

Rolls are a lot easier than with the 450. I still have trouble flying a clean immelmann.
Noticed some vibration on the skids, I will have to check the flightlogs.

When landing after the first flight the tail blades touched the ground and got scratched! Tried to do a mini auto and gave positive collective when hitting TH. Heli went up a bit and then I had trouble getting it down to the ground fast but not too hard. I should not try those things over concrete! Luckily the tail blade is still flyable and the KDBB Tail Blades are on their way.

Really nice flight, cold but clear skys and dry.

I had a small discussion with someone telling me it was illegal to fly a rc-heli without a special permit. He told me that he is a commercial drone pilot and therefore knows exactly that a permit is necessary to fly. I told him that there is a difference between commercial UAVs and recreational model aviation but he did not believe me. Luckily he was a nice guy and just left it with "don't get caught", but I will print out some official documents to carry with me just in case.

Before the first flight I checked the RPM with mit Android App and they were exactly where I wanted them to be: IU0: 2400; IU1:2600; IU2:2790

First flight nice and uneventful.

The second flight I almost damaged my LiPos. The flight seemed eternal, I did only fast circuits and stall turns and after 8:45 min I decided to land because it seemed odd, that my IISI telemetry alarm was still not sounding. After I landed I noticed my mistake: I forgot to confirm the LiPo Capacity on the IISI Telemetry system and therefore it did not warn me after 80% of the capacity was used.

I think the voltage never dropped below 3.5 V and I hope the system would have warned me if it had. But I have to be careful to arm the system properly before lift-off. It took 2.400 mAh out of 2.600 mAh (92%!) but the voltage after the flight was at 3.7V and the ESC LVC did not engage. LiPos were neither puffed nor hot so I think I was lucky.

still enjoying flying circles and figure eights with my new heli. First flight with the new spinblades and at first glance it seems I balanced them ok.

I can't believe my luck. I wasn't expecting to be able to fly but charged the packs anyway and got one flight in before the wind picked up and it started to rain.

Fixed the pitch-curves last night and did some tuning on the headspeed. I will have to crank up the throttle curve quite a bit (2.100 to 2.400 RPM at the moment). Just did some circles and figure eights.

Used my IISI Telemetry for the first time and really love it!

Weather was not to terrible in the morning and I managed to get one flight in before the rain started. Got rid of the training gear on the T-Rex 500 and did my first real flight on the heli. It was beautiful. Just flying aroung close and low at low speed but there is nothing like flying a new heli!

I did it! First spoolup ever and then I maidened my T-Rex 500, what an emotional moment! It was only a 1 minute, 50cm hover but it came off the ground beautifully!

Had to adjust the throttle curve because during spoolup the RPM got too high. Then I was scared a bit because the heli is tilted forward quite a bit and during spoolup the tail even lifted a couple of centimters more. Then I gave more pitch and the heli lifted straight up. What a feeling and what a sound when compared to my 450!

Next steps will be to recheck the heli (screws mainly), adjust throttle and pitch curves and get rid of the training gear.
