Evening flying with Tom. The dampers were completely shot, making clicking noises, so I replaced the head with one I'd just serviced. There's still some bearing noise but I have the replacement motor back from Align, just need to install it and check everything.

Rain forecast for the afternoon so I got down to Larcs at 7. Lovely blue skies and warm enough. Cleaned the shed out a bit between flights. Once we get rid of the cobwebs and rubbish, it'll be a decent place to hide from the elements.
The weather seemed to hold, so after lunch I went to Gumley until the wind got too strong.
A pretty good day of flying considering the forecast was so bad.

Gumley first to make sure the heli flies and genny works. Then through to Alcester to fly with Dave and Ian. It's a very nice wide field with the sun and wind from behind all day. It'll make a pretty good competition field for F3N.

Not a very good forecast so decided to stay local. Went to Larcs for an early session before meeting Gary at Gumley. Had a great morning flying with him and the usual fixie group. He managed to smoke a Turnigy pack while putting it into the Logo. Never seen one go up like that before.
Eventually the rain arrived and we called it a day.

Prepared the car to go to WHFC the previous evening, but just didn't feel like the drive when I woke up.
Went to LMAC and spent the morning with Scott and Kev. With all the other members having gone to RIAT, it was just us swapping flights and having a laugh. Eventually it was time to go to MK, but I couldn't be bothered with packing up and driving all that way while Gumley was empty.
Eventually a bit of drizzle came in and I took a break to watch the F1.
Went back to Gumley afterwards for a fantastic evening of flying on my own.

Was supposed to go to WHFC funfly, but with a variable forecast of wind and rain I decided to stay local. A good thing as after 3 flights the rain came down and I packed up. Went home to watch the Qualis and try and figure out the FTM. It's taking more practice than any of my other rounds and will probably be the one I drop, so it's pretty frustrating.
Went out in the afternoon and took the laptop onto the flightline. Played all the music I've gathered just to see what worked and felt good to fly to. Might do the same again tomorrow just to see if it still works.

Hadn't planned to fly, but Tom was up for it.
I got to abuse one of his 75C desire packs. The ESC was just about thermaling but the pack wasn't remotely warm. Too much pack for me though, the 35s are enough.
No real practice, just messing around in the grey sky.

Started off at Gumley. It never really got busy so I stayed until it was time to go to MK.
Efforts were made to retrieve Mike's Goblin bits from the tree using his gaffer taped waggler.
DO showed up later and we had a good conversation about set manoeuvres. He's still miles ahead of me, but at least I'm at a level where can speak about the same moves.
My FS routine is pretty much down. I need to refine some of the transitions, but at least I'm ready to move onto the new FTM.

A long morning doing BMFA tests at CMHC. Then through to MK for some SM and FS practice. Got to watch Duncan doing his prep for the World Champs and pick up some tips from him and Wayne. DavidS and I did some practice calling together. Hopefully we can make it a regular thing.
Mike put his Goblin in the big tree (again?) He managed to knock the body out but the canopy and boom are still up there.
Home at 8 for F1 qualifying.

Wasn't planning to fly but the lure of the sun and warmth was too much. Off to the flying field after work before I realised I'd left the radio at home. Went back and got it, had some nice flying barefoot and in shorts in the sun. Made some changes to the F3N freestyle routine. Gonna get it bedded in well before the next comp.

A day of F3N at Staffs Heli Club. I thought my first round of sets was pretty good but it scored lower than I was hoping and gave me a third with 740. I messed the freestyle round up by rushing it and getting a few things wrong. That got me a 6th with 781. Music didn't fair much better, timing was off and got most of it wrong. That was another 6th with 706. I almost didn't do the last round of sets but it was very close between a few of us so I gave it a go. Although I felt I flew it terribly, bar the Double O One, it turned out to be my best scoring round with 874. Overall an unexpected 3rd place and on the podium with Alex Hawtin and Aaron Cole.

With a forecast of wind, I was pretty certain I was going to be on my own all Saturday, so I was surprised by about 5 other fixies being there. They didn't really get in the way. Had a decent day with a lunchbreak in the middle and a bit of F1 at the end.

Was going to go before work, but it started raining just as I was leaving. Had a lunchtime session instead.
It was pretty windy, useful for trying the routines. After 4 months of struggle with the Jack Sparrow flight to music, I've decided to ditch it for something else. I think I've found the music I'm replacing it with and now I have 8 days to plan the routine and practice it. I could skip the music round but I might as well try and put something together.

SM was reasonable with good vis and the wind from behind. Still a lot to work on. FS is getting better, but still need to clean up the final bit. Not easy using batteries with 400 cycles that die towards the end, but there aren't any Desire in the country at the moment. FTM is still only halfway there and even that bit needs refining. Will have to finish that ASAP so I can start practising it.

Wind in the face made things difficult, but good for practice. Had a visitor while I was there. Amazing to see him dropping below the treeline doing manoeuvres. There were 2 of them around and one came in really close.
Changed some links and stayed a few minutes extra to charge up the packs for tomorrow morning.

Awesome long weekend. Friday at Weston, lots of flying and watching the guys practice. Saturday at MK for a BBQ and more flying. Had a few thermal warnings in the afternoon, but I think being at Weston in the heat would have been too much for me. Sunday at Gumley. Not too busy, got lots of flying in. Took an afternoon break and went back for some evening flying to finish it off.

Had to increase the negative pitch to make the collective even. For some reason it isn't reaching the endpoints in any of the flight modes. I may need to redo the setup.
One of of the flights I managed to exit out of battery selection. That meant no warnings and the ESC went into LVC and shut down. Fortunately it was giving a bit of power and I managed to get it back to the field. Never done that before, very odd.
Eventually got too windy to fly.

First was the scale round and I was asked to be a judge, which was interesting. A fun auto contest followed, with me missing the circle completely in one of my attempts. I should have done them inverted, maybe next year.
They finished up with the presentations and I got a trophy and a mug.
The trip home was made in one go in 7 and a half hours, no stops. Awesome weekend, and I'll have to go back next year as they want their trophy back.

Had a very vivid dream that well known pilot broke my last remaining model, v strange. Got to the field early to find out they don't allow flying by competitors before a competition, which I guess is the way it should be.
I was drawn 3rd to fly sets after Dave. I nailed a few of them, while the globes let me down. I also got an extra half roll and a flip wrong in the Cuban 8, but the judges didn't notice. That would normally get a 0.
I started the 2nd round of sets with a very bad rainbow X but I think the wind affected everyone and it turned out to be my best round, 940 out of 1000.
The 3rd round was freestyle. Dave flew before me, but it seemed very disconnected and I couldn't tell what he was doing most of the time. My freestyle is normally my worst due to my slower style, but it still scored well at 937 out of Dave's 1000. It was only just over 3 minutes, so there is a lot of room for improvement.

Final positions were me in 2nd behind Dave with 1878 out of 2000, which I am quite happy with and I think the judges got it right.

I called for Andy and he called for me, which was new for both of us. We both got it wrong once, but the judges were lenient and scored us anyway, which is exactly why this competition is great for learning.

The forecast was for rain, but I decided to go anyway as I'd feel pretty silly if they had the competition and I missed out. I left at 5am and drove through to Aberdeen, and only got lost a few times. Arrived at 1 to clear skies and got some flying in until 8. Met Andie from the forums and a bunch of friendly Scottish people. Bought some sandwiches and had an early night at the hotel.

I gave a few of my old packs to Scott. He tried the Opti 50 with 335 cycles and it worked better than his normal packs in his Sukhoi. Hopefully my new Desire packs get here soon.
Played with Antonio's DS-16 as well. Very impressive radio, great screen, intuitive programming. Pretty weighty though, defo have to use a strap.

Went to Larcs early to get a few flights in. Windier and cloudier than expected. Marc had a weird problem with his Raptor tail, but I think we managed to fix the other problem on his TRex 250.
Drove through to Heli Extreme to meet Darren (bigpops) and have a few flights at his club. He's a pretty good pilot with the helis and 3D quads. Saw Andy and Andy fly as well. A bunch of other members arrived as I was leaving, but the genny was already packed away and I'd had a decent afternoon in the sun.
Back at home with a cold one watching F1 again.

The morning session was mostly about setting the B up and doing a few routines until a receiver pack wire fatigued and departed from the connector. I salvaged the vertical fin and main gear to fix the A, so flew that for the after lunch session. Considerably windier in the afternoon, didn't stay too long. I'm going to look for another airframe for the B as spares seem to be very expensive.
I'm loving the iCharger at the moment. Lots of information on that colour screen including cell/line IR's. Interesting stuff trying consolidate those figures with how the pack performs.

Flew the B as the A is out with the bad bearing. Had to change the Y lead, which turned out to be a bit on the short side and proceeded to unplug itself on the 4th flight. Auto'd it down a fair distance away and snapped the vertical fin.
