Grey skies. Tested out the new set manoeuvres and most seem OK. The double O one is a horrible move, and it will be quite dependant on wind direction. I think I'm going to swap it for the Galaxy instead. Not the most technically challenging one, but weirdly quite a high K.
Sets take about 5:30 and packs come down with 20%.

Exactly 7 weeks until the next F3N comp and I'm taking this one a bit more seriously. Set Manoeuvres have all been changed to the highest K factor, although I can only manage 5 minutes flight time, so I've had to drop 2 of the longest ones and swap them for lower Ks.
L-R backwards rolling circle
R-L reversing rolling circle
L-R vertical tictoc 8
R-R Double O One
R-R reversing pirouetting globe
R-R double reversed pirouetting globe
R-L reversing piro funnel
C piro rainbow X
They all flow into each other so no flybys or wasted time. If I figure out a way of getting more flight time, I may change the low K rolling to something a bit longer and high scoring.

I'm still looking for new music, as the old one was a bit short. My inability to mix anything is making things difficult, so I'm resorting so searching YT for something premixed.

Went to check out the F3N comp going on near me. Didn't fly in this one, just took lots of notes around the more difficult set manoeuvres.

Arrived just after 8 and got loads of flying done with blue skies. It was 2 hours before anyone else turned up. Started raining around 12 and I almost left. Ended up getting a few flights between showers until it cleared. As I was leaving for the 2nd time, Duncan arrived, so I stayed and watched a few of his F3N flights. Now home and too tired to do anything. Might be an early night tonight.

Raining after work, but gave it an hour and it turned out great. I got a bit of sun and loads of flying. I have no idea what other people do in the evening 😃

Windy, but a nice session. Did my first piro globe double reversed, also worked on breaking flights up into lots of different things. The new HS defo helps with the wind, it all went really well.

Started off a bit grey and a little drizzly. Cleared up a bit and, except for the bugs, turned into a really nice evening. Worked on lots of piro and reversals. Things are coming along nicely.

Beautiful evening, swapped flights with Thomas for ages. Loving having enough batteries and chargers for continuous flights.

Blue skies, windy and a bit cold. Wanted to play with a few settings after having witnessed the way the professionals do it at Weston Park, but I didn't stay too long in the end.
Moved the HS from 1980 up to 2100, but hard to tell if there was any real difference in the wind. Gradually reduced it down to 2000 and left it there. Also turned up the piro and cyclic rates.

With the sky being grey and a fair amount of wind, I wasn't expecting anyone there, but there were quite a few fixies. They were nice enough to take lunch while I got the regular flights in. Lots of low down stuff, makes a nice change to being a few mistakes high.

Windy from the other direction. Practised keeping it lower with rolls, piro tictocs, etc.

The dual charger isn't keeping up, making me wait a few minutes between flights so I'm back home to finish the other charger. That should give me 3 high power ports capable of changing the big flight packs at 2C and a 4th port for the Rx battery.

Update: OK, finished the charge case. Had to flip the fans so the air goes in the same direction as the PSU fans, but otherwise an easy job. Charging 2 flight packs at 2C, drawing 46 amps at 24 volts, which is 1,100 watts. Nice!

Arrived at Zone around 8:30 with Connor. I managed to reach 801 flights before the end of the month, but then I stripped the main gear which killed my flying for the rest of the weekend. No-one had a spare gear, and I couldn't get a replacement from Align-trex, so I was pretty stuffed. The flying was amazing though. Best night flying I've ever seen too.

Another great summer's evening of flying. Almost reached 800 flights so far this year, but the session was curtailed by a certain wife. Just a few flights this weekend and I should safely make it before the end of the month.
Leaving to watch Zone tomorrow morning with Connor.

Busy. The tail is starting to get a bit jumpy and I'm not sure what it is. It sounds very geary as well, but everything looks OK. The bearings on the tail control feel like they have quite a bit of play, so I'll start with replacing those.

Best session of the year so far. Warm, blue skies, just about no wind and no-one else around. Flew continuously for 3 hours and absolutely loved it. The only let-down was my dual charger wasn't keeping up and I had to wait a few minutes after each flight for packs to finish. The new charge box is almost complete, so I'll be able to charge 4 full packs at a time soon enough. Dropped the flight time by 10 seconds to 5:10 as the packs were coming down a bit on the low side. Finished at 9 as the sun was going down.

Forecast was for rain and wind all day, so I'd ordered some maintenance links and gears in preparation. Only thing is this ball links for the rudder pushrod are different to all the others, so I had a 90 minute round trip to Midland Helicopters to pick up a £5 bag of bits :)
Got the heli sorted for Sunday though.

Resisted flying in the morning to do some more analysis of my last F3N scores and plan my next campaign. Had lunch and took extra food to MK so I could spend the day there. Didn't get much done initially but eventually everyone else either left or went quadding and I had the flight line to myself. Made some really good progress.

Cold, wind up and down, clouds here and there, jacket off and on. Didn't really focus on anything, just flew a lot. Have decided to stick with current music plus a minute of something else, so I need to get back to focussing on the next comp.

Warm and bright enough enough for naked flying, but just too windy. Called it quits after a few flights.
Managed to stick an empty pack in the heli and had a forced landing after a minute. I'm not sure how I thought it was charged, but it's crazy puffing now. Was down to 2% / 3.1v a cell. Hopefully it'll recover, although I think it's had over 100 decent cycles. No great loss.

Nice lunch break. Did the new SM round, and it works well. It does run a bit long on the batteries though, so I may have to lower the headspeed or find a way of shortening it. Worked on the FS routine as well. Just some minor updates.

Went to Larcs first, but the farmer had changed the lock AGAIN! Tried Gumley and it wasn't too bad, considering it's the fixies favourite day to fly. Good some good reversal and light wind practice. It was even t-shirt and bare feet for a bit.

Arrived at about 7 after having a clear drive through to Heathrow. Paul and Ethan Williams arrived next, so we had some warm-up flights together. Watching Ethan fly didn't help the nerves, and Paul won Grassroots last year so my expectations started dropping.

Pilot's briefing was at 9:45 and I was picked to do a calibration flight for the judges. I'm not sure if it helped or not, I think my calibration flight of SM and first SM flight were about the same.

The first SM round was reasonably good, no screw-ups and I didn't score zero for anything. My biggest fear was I'd been practising the moves incorrectly, but they all seemed on the money. The VTT8 was pretty bad in the last quarter, but everyone seemed to get it wrong, and they didn't zero me, so not bad at all. The feedback from the judges was mostly general stuff, which essentially means more practice.Jamie gave me some advice on how the practice the VTT8,

After the SMs my nerves settled a bit and I was happy to sit and watch the flying. Gary and Clare from CMHC and David from MK came along to watch, so I had someone to talk to. Also met aussie Dennis from Helifreak, and had a chat to him about the centre-sprung throttle I tried a few months ago.

The FS is where everyone else excelled. Steven Gerrard's opening flight was incredible. It had some sort of pirouetting flower which I just have to try. John Nobb's flight was right on the deck, and everyone seemed at a very high level, even those who struggled with the SM. My flight was much more sedate, and short. My routine normally takes 3:30, but in the moment I rushed the whole thing and landed after 2:55, which resulted in a time penalty.

The FTM round was the usual mishmash of top pilots getting an amazing mix of music and flight styles, and some that didn't seem to make sense. I really didn't know how my Waltz went down, and even my caller said it might be my Achilles Heel 😃 I also changed one of the moves trying to bring the heli back after a drift downwind, which resulted in me repeating a move instead of using the variation.
Fortunately the judges liked it, and it was my highest scoring round at a normalised 803.

Then there was a final round of SM. This didn't go very well, as the wind had picked up and I was trying to implement the feedback I received in round 1. Dave calmed me down a bit mid-routine and it ended well enough.

All in all a day that surpassed my expectations. 789 Out of 1000 puts me straight into the Pro category with a decent margin. Huge thanks to Dave Fisher and Rachel Plant for being my callers.

Early start to take advantage of the morning sun. It turned cold and windy pretty quickly, and a lot of the fixies started showing up. Eventually got too busy, so I left for lunch and went to Larks. Had 2 flights before it started spitting. There's no place to hide at Larks, so I packed up and went back to Gumley. The wind was keeping the fixies off the flightline, so I just kept flying until I felt completely done.
I've done as much as I can for tomorrow and feel pretty good regardless of what the outcome will be.

The weather forecast looks good for Sunday's competition, so I've sent my music and set manoeuvres list to the CD. I've elected to do the following SM:
Rolling circle,
Backward rolling circle,
Pirouetting loop,
Vertical tic-toc eight,
Two Opposite Piro Funnels,
Waltz,
Funnel with half rolls and pirouettes,
Inverted backwards horizontal eight.

It's a mix of K factors, the lowest being 7 for the backwards inverted eight, and 10.5 for the vertical tictoc 8. This should give me an idea of how the judges score on easy stuff done well, up to difficult stuff done OK/badly.

Saturday's weather looks OK, so I'm staying local and should be able to practice most of the day. I might even get a few flights in later today after the wind and rain drops off.

Took the day off to get some last minute practice in. Lots of flights as the weather got progressively worse. I'm putting the VTT8 back in the SM and getting rid of roll reversals. Mike says my FTM is boring, but he likes the FS. Too late to change it now 😱
