Early start to take advantage of the morning sun. It turned cold and windy pretty quickly, and a lot of the fixies started showing up. Eventually got too busy, so I left for lunch and went to Larks. Had 2 flights before it started spitting. There's no place to hide at Larks, so I packed up and went back to Gumley. The wind was keeping the fixies off the flightline, so I just kept flying until I felt completely done.
I've done as much as I can for tomorrow and feel pretty good regardless of what the outcome will be.

Cold and windy. Didn't bother practising F3N, just messed around with some old stuff.

The weather forecast looks good for Sunday's competition, so I've sent my music and set manoeuvres list to the CD. I've elected to do the following SM:
Rolling circle,
Backward rolling circle,
Pirouetting loop,
Vertical tic-toc eight,
Two Opposite Piro Funnels,
Waltz,
Funnel with half rolls and pirouettes,
Inverted backwards horizontal eight.

It's a mix of K factors, the lowest being 7 for the backwards inverted eight, and 10.5 for the vertical tictoc 8. This should give me an idea of how the judges score on easy stuff done well, up to difficult stuff done OK/badly.

Saturday's weather looks OK, so I'm staying local and should be able to practice most of the day. I might even get a few flights in later today after the wind and rain drops off.

Took the day off to get some last minute practice in. Lots of flights as the weather got progressively worse. I'm putting the VTT8 back in the SM and getting rid of roll reversals. Mike says my FTM is boring, but he likes the FS. Too late to change it now 😱

Missed flying at lunch due to rain. Tried again after work and got 1 flight in before it started getting dark. I feel like I haven't flown in ages.

Cold, windy, probably flyable if I wasn't recovering from a throat infection and flu. Called it a day and went home. Had a quick squiz on the CMHC webcam and they seem pretty busy. Nice one.

Sunny, wind in the face. Rolling circle reversal really sucks in the wind. The reversal tends to balloon or drop depending on the wind. Defo needs more practice. The FTM was still a bit behind the music, but was a bit better than last time.

A bit too windy for practice, so mostly just played with funnels. Blue skies and a chilly breeze.

Blue skies! Not quite warm enough to get naked, but almost 😀
Fresh breeze from front right was a nice direction to work on. SM and FS was OK, but the FTM was horrible. You have time in the first 2 to work at it, and slow it down to make sure you're in the right place, but there's no place to hide in the flight to music. Pretty bad 😠

Gorgeous day, got a practice round of F3N in, as well as playing with a couple of Tim Jones' moves. Should get some more flying in this evening.
The heli is sounding a bit gear'y, so I might get spares and start replacing pieces. I pre-flight checked the heli a few times today. Will hopefully bring down my crash statistics this year.

After yesterday's session ended early, I re-attached the broken canopy post to the frame with a longer bolt and washer, and replaced the wobbly anti-rotation bracket on the 700. Also ordered some new head dampers/feather shaft sleeves. She'll be as good as new by the end of the week. I'm quite happy the way the reversed skids are working, as well as the stubby skid pipes.

Finished the rebuild this morning and went to Gumley to complete the setup and test flights. Pretty cold and not very pleasant, but at least the heli is back to flying state. I quite like the new canopy and Hughes 500 skids.

Started breaking the heli down and making a list of parts that I need. For all the carnage, it's not looking too bad, maybe even a lower cost than the last one. If I do a servo/system test, then I should have a complete spares list, and hopefully have it built for testing on the weekend.
Unfortunately I threw a broken bit of plastic away the night before, which I then realised I could glue back on, and save myself having to replace a side frame. It took me 20 minutes to go through a day's worth of rubbish with a fine-tooth comb to find a tiny piece of black plastic, but it's saved me almost £50 for a frame and having to dismantle the heli.
I'm feeling quite positive after this crash. The heli is built really well, I'm rebuilding it myself and getting to know it, and all the servos survived.

Went out early with Dean to the Corby club. Got some good flights practising for F3N, but then I had a mechanical failure. One of the balls on a servo arm unscrewed itself. I guess the crash a few weeks ago loosened the loctite and the ball just worked its way out. Lots of broken bits, can't be arsed to figure it all out just yet.

Was supposed to be an early start with Gary and Dean, but I had to go into work for a while. Had a couple of flights at LMAC with Dean, but it got a bit full, so we went to Larcs. Flew a bit until the rain came. Might go to Corby club tomorrow.

Working on F3N stuff. Less than 4 weeks to the first comp. Just finalised the last bits of the FTM this morning so some of it's still a bit ropey, but here it is. No more changes, just practice.

Cold and windy. Tried a few SM, but not really feeling it. Played around with a few new moves including the WooHoo. Didn't turn out too bad in the end.

Windy and right in the face, perfect for weak direction practice. Did a full round, starting with SM. The rolls were pretty bad, very up and down. The VTT8 wasn't bad at all, surprisingly good in the wind, so that sim is paying off.
The piro loop got blown in a bit towards the flightline, so would probably have scored a zero, but the rest was all recognizable.
FS wasn't bad either, although I ran out of time massively. I was slowing things down in the wind to make them accurate, but it was too much. Probably zero for the last 2 moves.
FTM music was OK, kept it smaller in the wind. Got moved around a bit, but quite happy with that.

Drove out to meet Paz and have a few flights at his local field. Nice field, wind from the right. Got to fly his Oxy 3, which flew incredibly well for such a small heli. My flying was OK with the wind on my weak side. One flight really bugged me as it looked like the boom had bent up. After landing a few times and trying to figure it out, I realised the front of the canopy wasn't clipped in, hence the high nose.
Paz flies really well, piros both ways and has quite a different style. All his helis seem incredibly well set up for someone self-taught and who flies on his own. Might have to have another meetup with Gary included, as it seems about half way between us.

Cold with the wind right in the face, not pleasant. Got to try Gary's Skookum bailout, which I disliked intensely. It seemed to do the job OK, but in a very inefficient way.
Enter the hard deck slowly inverted and it does a violent piro flip to get tail-in upright with a loss of height, and then seems to add collective slowly, which means to comes pretty close to the ground, totally unnerving. At least I have a better understanding of how these things work, as I may still pay for the VBar rescue at some point.
Dropped in at LMAC on the way home and had a flight between the fixed wingers. Too busy, so I went to LARCS for a flight. No-one else there, and some traveller kids with dogs hanging around, so just one flight before going home for lunch.

Superb day at MK. Perfect vis, not too windy, t-shirt weather for a few hours, I just charged and flew all day long.
Hamish Morley, the new Fast Lad sponsored pilot, paid us a visit, so it was nice to see him fly.
I really enjoyed the day. My flying may not have been the most exiting, but it just felt so good to be in control, floating it around and making it do everything I wanted it to.

Arrived as everyone seemed to be leaving, which suited me just fine. The wind was dropping as well for the best time of day. Did some piro, gentle, tictoc practice as the sun went down. Totally stuffed after a long day of flying

Great morning with Gary at CMHC, trading flights for 6 hours. Started with a half decent SM flight, and then practised a variety of things. I even got half a bacon and cheese sandwich thrown in.

Too tired to write, this is Gary's post :)

Quick session on the sim before I go out this morning.
I've developed some bad habits during pirouetting, mostly around waiting for the nose/tail to be in the right place instead of being able to adjust at any point.
I had a play with the piro trainer and it seems pretty nice. I found putting it on almost its lowest setting (0.03) and doing things like tictocs and loops really force you to think and add corrections at all points.
With the bad forecast this weekend, I think I'll be playing with this a bit more.

Started off well in the sun, but within a few minutes fog had rolled in.
Did a SM flight, and scored zeros for the 2 high K factor moves. This is getting frustrating, I may have to drop those and choose something easier.
The FS flight was a disaster, all over the place, and I pretty much gave up half way through.
Didn't even bother with a FTM with the fog getting thicker.
Probably the worst direction for wind for me, and the low vis made for a very bad competition practice session. At least I'm getting to know what my limits are, and I made a lot of notes about what did and didn't work. I finished off with 2 flights of non-stop piros, mostly working on the chaos.

Still quite a few fixed wingers flying, and I was drained from being out in the cold for 2 days. Had a chat to Kevin and watched him fly the Goblin 500.

A cold, long day. After a busy work week and not much flying/sim, I felt very disconnected. With bad vis, I settled on just doing the basics and by lunch time I was back into it, just enjoying the flying. Good fun.

RichardV

Far colder than forecast, but so nice to have a rebuilt heli working exactly as it did before.
I witnessed Andy having a horrible crash with his 700, looks absolutely messed, far worse than my was. Must have bounced 10 metres.
I used the opportunity to ask him some questions about setup for comps, and played with some settings through the VBar Control. Practiced the SMs quite a bit. Scored zero for both my high K factors moves in the first few rounds, but I have a few weeks to get them right.

All in all, a trying weekend, but I learned so much, got so many questions answered and seem to be fitting in with the MK crowd so much better. Even K is warming up to me :)
