Training day with the Align Flight Academy. Started with a talk about setup from Alan, then Ben had a look at my machine. He turned the collective down, made them even top and bottom, and increased the tail throws to absolute max. Then he flew the heli and turned the cyclic up. He says I should start raising my tail speed over time, as it's slow at the moment. He went on to set up a few machines for the other pilots, so I flew my own a few times to get used to the settings.

Lunch was pizza provided by Gale.

After flying a few times, I had 3 flights with Ben buddy boxing me. We tried some standard headspeed stuff, and then turned it up to the higher setting. It flies a whole lot better now that it did before. I think I had a bad setup that I compensated with by flying slowly, and whenever I turned the HS up, it just flew horribly. Now I have a decent setup, turning the HS up still makes it fly pretty good. I'm super happy with that.

There were a few more crashes. Terry lost orientation on his nitro and put it in sand. Another pilot was buddy-boxing with Alan, and went the wrong way during tictocs, got the collective and elevator out of sync and hammered it into the ground before Alan could do anything.

I had a great day that I couldn't have had without Manny and Dennis lending me their packs. Manny's new Align 6000s were only the only ones that could take the higher HS though. I think I may have killed a cell in his old pack, as that just wasn't charging or balancing properly at the end of the day. He loaned me an Align receiver pack charger too that I used all day.

Randy is a pretty good pilot too. When he was flying on his own is was pretty sedate with good orientation, but when he was being buddy-boxed with Alan at height, he was really throwing it around.

Out walking the Wetlands past the airfield this morning when I saw a truck belonging to the other first pilot at the Fabulous Las Vegas Funfly. Quickly walked back, packed the car and drove over. Met Manny Hale from Align RC CDN in Canada. He was kind enough to charge my receiver packs up and then let me try out his new Align 6000 packs. They were a little bit heavier than the 5200s and being at 2,000 foot ASL tictocs were a little mushy, but they seem like nice enough packs.
I got through 3 of his packs, almost stalled the blades during a particular funnel but fortunately it made it out, although I did calm it down a bit after that.
I normally fly at 300 feet ASL, so my headspeed seems far too low with the heavy packs.
Met and watched magnumeng fly his stretched Protos. He's got a nice style with good straight lines. Would make a good competition pilot. Unfortunately he bounced his Protos on a downwind auto, just a link and missing canopy magnet though.
Not 2 minutes later Manny lost tail drive on his 470L and put it in quite hard into the runway. I guess the funfly has officially started then.
Ben flew his 700xn with loads of aggression. Gonna have to ramp it up tomorrow.

Great day of flying... last flight ended with a down wind auto. Tipped the 380/420 over and broke a link...

Superb weather up here today with the forecast even better for tomorrow.
Few flights on the protos, still can’t get over the stumbling block of doing the downward section of the rolling loop :(

Quick flight on bills raptor after setting it up again from scratch. All is well with it

Early start, brilliant day of sunshine and light wind.
Mike lost his Goblin 380 early on and spent an hour looking for it. At the end of the day he drove out half a mile away and managed to find it in a yard, amazing.
The B machine is flying really well. I sorted a tail gain issue early on. It's still a bit whippy in the piros, but at least everything else is pretty good.
Back home to dismantle it and pack for the trip.

Managed to get upto the field after work for the first time this year. Wanted to test the protos to make sure all was ok for the weekend following the motor changeout.

Feels like a new helicopter again. Replaced the motor like for like but the power difference feels substantial.

Weather looking good for the weekend too:)

High wind, hail and snow, still a blizzard out there now. After yesterday's bench trimming, the heli is flying fine. It has a little shudder at high speed that might be related to head gain, but I'll play with it on a day more conducive to testing.

The A machine has been dismantled and made ready for packing. I'll fly and tune the B a bit more this week, and then I'll pack that too.

Woke up to howling wind and rain so headed to B&Q to get supplies for painting at home. The wind then died off and sun started to come through so scrapped the painting to go flying.

The protos has just had a new main belt fitted since I shredded one last weekend and sounded different for the first 6 flights. On the 7th flight whilst practicing 4 point tic tics I lost all drive. Auto it in and took it home to discover that the motor shaft has sheared off. Have a spare motor here but will need a new motor mount bearing.

Set up bills raptor Hughes and gave it a little test.

Would have thought it was summer up here today. Blue sky, sun out, very little wind made for a good day at the field. No hats or gloves today and got to the stage where you could take your jacket off.

2nd flight of the day with the protos suddenly gave off warning sounds. The main belt is shot. Stated to wonder why as it was replaced not long ago but then remembered I left the protos in the van last night and the temps must have made the belt loose :( didn’t have the spare with me so just flew the urukay.

Busy at the field which is a good sign, but you just end up chatting more than flying.
