Was supposed to be decent day. Got a few flights in and then the rain came down. Alan showed up with his 470, but it was too wet for flying. Went home early. The forecast for tomorrow now looks wet too 😠

Just 1 flight in the snow. The flying was fun, but the heli came down a bit damp, so I didn't do it again.. Just dried the heli in the workshop and called it a day.

All on my own at Gumley today. Freezing cold but I got a few flights in, and it wasn't too bad in the end. Worked on some new moves too.

Enjoyed flying, not too many fixies around. Dan and Bill crashed their planes, but I had a really good day, felt very connected with the heli. The sun seems to go down awfully early though.

Mist and drizzle for most of the morning. A brief break with the clouds lifting, but then rain. Called it a day after spending most of it simming in the workshop.

Cold and windy, but exactly the kind of day I needed. Spent an hour in the shed getting the geometry a bit better, and then a few test flights in windy conditions. I replaced the RJX blades with Aligns and I'm far happier with them, especially in the autos. The piros are far better with the updated geom, very flat and hardly any mainshaft movement. It's definitely less grabby during piro loops, even in the wind.
I got to play a bit with the Style slider, but I couldn't feel much difference.

Test flew Alan's 470 at Gumley. Went through to Clipston so he could fly it as well. He flew much better than I expected he would, and he got to go home with the heli still intact.

I went though to MK to drop the trophy off. I had one flight on the 700 to make sure the servos were OK, but it wasn't worth flying any more until I've finished the geometry fiddling.
Alessio let me fly his new VBarred 700x. He's mode 3 and it really is amazing how you can bind your own radio in a few seconds and have his setup with your switch layout ready to fly. He had a head wobble during piros but that was sorted by lowering the head gains.

The dampers finally arrived, so I stripped, cleaned and rebuilt the head with fresh grease. The dampers are tight on the spindle but loose in the head block. I'm tempted to add some JB Weld to tighten them up a bit.

Started off fairly well, although the heli feels too loose, doesn't track well and seems to give a lot of unnecessary disk movement in piros. It really is time to do some serious maintenance to tighten everything up, and spend some proper time tuning it. Got to get the 2nd heli flying as well. My rubbish flying was highlighted when DO arrived and showed us all how it should be done, aggressive, fast and big.
I have some leave coming up, so gonna spend the whole week sorting the girls out for next year.

It was sunny first thing this morning, but as I arrived at Larcs it started raining. I moved on to Gumley and waited for the rain to pass. Pretty cold and windy, so it was full winter gear with mitt and thermals. Was supposed to go to MK, but with the mediocre conditions and early sundown, it wasn't worth the drive.
I stayed to watch a bit of the bonfire and night flying until it got too cold.

Changed the cyclic servos for less worn ones last night. They still judder on collective changes but they don't judder on their own any more. I don't think the BL815Hs have the legs, so I'll either go back to BL700Hs or something else, although there's always risk going with something unknown.
The flying was OK, a bit windy.

Blue skies and light wind, but I just wasn't getting a connection to the heli. It seemed to be all over the place, which is so weird after a weekend of wind and coping easily.

3 Flights at Larcs, but it was pretty cold and windy so I moved on to Gumley. I was enjoying it, the wind was keeping the fixies off the flightline and then the motor started flaming. I think it was shorting on the frame through some worn heatshrink. I think the motor is stuffed, hopefully the ESC is OK.

Update: Had a spare motor I needed to change the bullets on, but that's now in and I got 3 test flights before the sun went down. I'm not sure if the wearing of the heatshrink had anything to do with the burnout, but apparently these motors have a lifetime warranty from Align, so I'm going to see if they'll replace it.

Surprisingly busy considering the forecast of grey skies and wind. I had a real connection with the heli early on, couldn't put a foot wrong even in the wind. Not having my thermals, the cold got to me eventually and I called it a day. Nice session.

1 Flight at Gumley to make sure everything was working and charge a few packs. First time using the mitt since last winter.
Then through to Buckminster for the 3D Champs Funfly. Unfortunately it was so windy there was no heli flying going on. I watched the FPV racing for a bit, but it's not much of a spectator sport.
Went home and worked on finishing the B machine, mostly loctiting a dry run build.

A lonely morning on my own at Larcs, but after a while I got into it and started enjoying flying again. Went home for lunch and then on to MK to fly with the Mikes and Daves.

We did a bit of flying and talking bollocks until the sun went down. MikeW crashed both his Goblins, AGAIN! MikeS had a mishap with his 700 but nothing serious. A good day of flying.

A nice session with blue skies and light wind. I had a eureka moment with the PWR when I realised why it had scored low and why DO does them different to me. I had thought it was a style thing, but I've realised I was just doing them wrong.

Gumley first, too busy. Larcs for a bit until it was time to get some lunch and get down to MK. It turned out to be a really nice session with the Daves. First a bit of work on SM for next year and then some rolling stuff.
Home for the F1 and then started putting some music together for next year's FTM.

2 Early flights at Gumley to check the rebuild and also make sure the genny was OK before I drove through to Loughborough for the 3D Champs funfly. Initially it was a bit rubbish, with the rain, and carpark being a long way from the flightline. I didn't have any cover, so I just had to hide until the rain disappeared enough to get the table, genny and chargers set up. After that it went really well, got to fly with George and the blokes from WHFC. Met atomiccomp and Maria.

A long day at MK. I had intended to got to Jason's funfly in North Notts, but the forecast showed rain all day there and clear at MK for the morning. I didn't expect to be long so didn't bother taking lunch.
Woods was already there. He had a few flights and then crashed both his Goblins. Not much damage, but enough to end his day early.
I flew almost non-stop, getting some good practice in.
Having been at the field for 10 hours with no food, I got a bit tired, which turned out to be a problem. During a rolling auto, I just didn't have enough headspeed to complete it and the heli hit the deck. Not too hard, but enough to break the skids, blades, boom and a blade grip arm. It'll be a relatively cheap/quick fix, but shouldn't have happened.
At least tomorrow is too wet n windy for flying, so it's a build day for me.

Picked Tom up for some evening flying. I'm getting more confident in the dark, which is always dangerous. All the new moves I'm working on are taking a chunk out of my flight time. I think I was ending up just over 4 minutes on most of them.

She flies! Changed all the servos this morning and took her out for a tentative few flights. The trims are out and it's a bit whippy in left piros, but everything else is just as it was. I'll have to do one of those long days at the field where I redo all the trims and optimisations.

Arrived late, got a few flights in before starting the search for Andy's heli and getting scratched up.

The flying went well and I got some new moves down. Duncan came out later to get some practice for 3D champs, which was nice to watch. I also got to ask him about some of the moves. I don't think I'll being doing the Champs this year but it's good information.

Towards the end of the day, I had a complete lockout coming out of a loop and the heli went nose-first into the rough before I had a chance to do anything. I hit TH to stop any further damage and strangely the heli lifted up above the long stuff and then dropped back again. The radio then started giving low Rx voltage warnings, so I assumed I'd had some sort of low voltage reset. The blades were folded back but I couldn't see any signs of damage. The log only showed low voltage warnings after TH which explained why I never got any warnings in flight, but didn't explain the lockout. After still not finding any damage, I found the rear cyclic servo was completely solid. I had the feeling I was able to level the heli with aileron but elevator had no effect for that half-second before it went in, so I'm pretty sure that's the culprit.

So amazingly, after hitting the deck at speed and full RPM, the scrub slowed the heli down enough to not cause any damage beyond a few cracks in the canopy. I'm pretty happy with that.

The forecast for this evening looked dire so I went for a quick lunchtime session. Quite a few fixed-wingers around but they normally vacate the flight-line when I go up. Completely unnecessary of course, but it's nice to have a clear space to fly in anyway.
Went back after work for a few more flights with Tom and Rob.

It was raining when I left work but, as the evenings are getting shorter, I had to take a chance it would get better. By the time I charged up, checked the heli over and had a cup of tea, the clouds had gone and the wind had died.
It turned out to be a really chilled session, lots of rolling and drills.

Started maintenance on the A machine. Replaced the main gear, main shaft, main shaft lower bearing and swapped the tail box with the barely used one from Dean's airframe. The front TT unit had been changed on Monday, so left that alone.
Still to change the dampers in the head and then she'll be ready for some more flying.
